A trial ZONESCAN 800 survey was requested by
Thames Water to directly compare the effectiveness of their previously
installed radio acoustic loggers with the advanced technology offered
by the ZONESCAN 800 system.
This trial survey was to form the basis of a thorough technical appraisal. |

The local operatives used an A
to Z map on this occasion to plan the patrol route. This type of
map can then be substituted for a pipe diagram for any follow up
investigation work. |
When the operator sets the
leak value threshold level at 30, rather than 50, it can be clearly
seen from the Project Table opposite that the whole length Lancaster
Road becomes an area of interest. |
The leakage engineer designated to this trial parked his van on Lancaster Road and carried out a Remote Listen to each of the now highlighted loggers to determine if it was leakage that the loggers were indicating. Each Remote Listen confirmed that each logger was indeed logging leak noise. A correlation carried out between the ZONESCAN 800
loggers located outside number 4a Lancaster Road and outside number
18 Lancaster Road gives the result as indicated below. |

The outcome of this operational trial comparing
the ZONESCAN 800 system with Thames Water’s then incumbent system
resulted in a score of 9/10 for the ZONESCAN 800. Compared to 4/10
for the incumbent loggers. |
Thames Water Utilities Ltd have subsequently invested in over 1500 ZONESCAN 800 loggers for specifically targeting their high risk/high leakage areas. The main key benefits over the incumbent logger system indicated by this trial were: 1. One man patrolling carried out a 100% download
of all the loggers in half the time. |
